Brief
report on the findings of National Achievement Survey (NAS)-2015 in respect of
Class X Students- SCERT-Hyderabad
The National Achievement Survey, 2015
conducted by National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) for
Class X students. The NCERT has conducted several rounds of achievement survey
at the elementary education (at Class III,V&VIII levels) across the country.
This is the first time sample survey delete taken up for class X to ascertain
students achievement levels in five curricular
areas, i.e. English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science and Telugu with the
following objectives.
1. To
study the achievement levels of students of Class X in Telugu, English,
Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.
2. To study the effects of intervening variables
like students home background, area, gender, Social Groups etc.
This survey was conducted on a sample
comprising of 2, 77,416 students in 7,216 schools across 33 states/Union
Territories.
1. The
Reporting Unit for sample is State/UTs as well as CBSE and ICSE Boards.
2. The
Selection of Schools using Probability Proportional to Size (PPS) Techniques is
used in each state.
3. A
sample of 358 schools in each State has been selected.
4. All
schools managements were included in the sample.
5. Samples
of maximum 45 students were selected from each sample schools.

Findings
in NAS with regard to Andhra Pradesh-Class X:
1. Average
performance of the students of the state is significantly lower than the
national mean (250) in English (238), Science (239) and Telugu (231).
2. Average
performance of students from rural areas in the state does not differ
significantly from those in urban areas
in all 5 subjects
3. Average
performance of students in Telugu (231) is significantly lower than the
national mean. It is significantly lower for students from urban areas in
English (263) and science (257).
4.
The students
in English (238) scored below national average (250) in the NAS Class X
performance, which is 17th Rank in India, whereas Nagaland has 1st
Rank in India who’s secured (303).
5.
The students
in Modern Indian Language (Telugu) (231) scored below national average (250) in
the NAS Class X performance, which is 20th Rank in India, whereas Kerala has 1st
Rank in India who’s secured (271).
6.
The students
in Maths (251) scored just above national average (250) in the NAS Class X
performance, which is 6th Rank in India, whereas Odisha has 1st Rank
in India who secured (265).
7.
The students
in Science (239) scored below national average (250) in the NAS Class X
performance, which is 11th Rank in India, whereas Kerala has 1st
Rank in India who’s secured (276).
8.
The students
in Social Science (252) scored just above national average (250) in the NAS
Class X performance, which is 6th Rank in India, whereas Kerala has 1st
Rank in India who’s secured (267).
9. Average
performance of girls does not differ significantly from those of boys in all 5
subjects
10. Average
performance of ST students in Mathematics (229) is significantly lower than
average of the general group (263).
11. Average
performance of students from different school managements does not differ
significantly except in MIL-Telugu(227) where the percentage of government
schools is significantly lower than private schools in MIL Telugu (257)
12. Performance
can be described as satisfactory for students 37.5% in English, 50.8% in Math,
42.6% in Science, 57.2% in Social science and 42.8% of students in Telugu.
Thus, there is need for improvement of 62.5% of students in English, 49.3% in
Math 57.5% in Science and 57.1% in Telugu.
13. Score
of less than 35% :51% in English, 41% in Math, 52% in Science, 33% in Social
Science and 20% in Telugu. Effort is needed to ensure that all students score
more than 35% in every subject.
14. Score
of 75% and more: 2% in Science, 4% in Social science, 7% in Telugu and none in
Math and science. The proportion of high scores is low and need to be
increased.
15. Average
performance of SC/ST students is poorer across all subjects. SC and ST students
make up approximately 30% of the sample in the state, but contribute 53% of the
students needing improvement.
16. Focus
is required on the following competencies: Geometry in Mathematics, all the
topics in Science, Economics in Social Science and Reading Comprehension in
Telugu and English
Suggestions/Measures:
The survey revealed that the state is
performing below the overall average score in all subject areas; it indicates
that there is need for significant improvement in learning levels. In this regard
the SCERT has suggested the following measures for improvement of quality
education with regard to IX and X Class Students.
Teacher
Training Programmes:
1. Subject wise Teacher’s training (pre-in-service
and in-Service) programme should be designed on the basis of NAS findings where
the children lacking behind to improve pedagogical aspects in relation to
different subjects areas.
2. Content
Enrichment in-service teacher Training Programme should be designed at
secondary level under RMSA.
3. Pre-Service
teacher Education programmes i.e., B.Ed and M.Ed Courses should be revisited
according the needs of the current scenario.
4. To
update the training Modules on subjects, leadership skills and communication
skills to all teachers.
5. To
provide orientation to HMs on academic leadership to enhance leadership
qualities.
Use
of Information Communication Technology:
6. Orientation
to HMs and teachers on ICT to interconnect the subject concepts through subject
forums.
7. To
provide informal subject Enrichment Programme like E-learning, MOOKs, Certificate
courses for escalate the subject knowledge to all teachers.
8. Updating
of teacher ICT manuals on teaching methods as per performance of teachers and to effectively using ICT in the class
room process.
9. To design the development of capacity building
among teachers through online by way of subject forums.
10. Online
examinations / Computer based test (Internal Exams) will be implemented in all
High schools, Upper Primary Schools.
11. Implementation of Andhra Pradesh e-Knowledge
Exchange Portal (APEX) to address gaps in teacher training and
enhancing their knowledge through online courses
Evaluation/Assessment/Research
12. It
is suggested to revisit curriculum expectation and initiate curricular reforms
on the basis of NAS results whenever necessary.
13. It
is found that the performance of the Government
Schools is found below than
private schools hence it is right time to introduce the twinning programe to
enhance the sharing the experience between the schools.

Learning Centers at Block Level, TLM at Class level will be established
16. Implementation
of CCE Pattern in Class X is from 2016-17onwards. Weightage for internals for
VIII and IX class for 2018-19 SSC Examinations batch.
17. As
per assessment of teachers/ students training/remedial classes will be
conducted every year.
18. Assessment
cell in SCERT is need to established to assess performance of teachers/students
19. RMSA
should utilize MMER funds to conduct Research Studies.
Dissemination/sharing
of Findings from top to bottom level:
20. It
is suggested to disseminate the NAS finding in easy and understandable manner
to deliberate to all district stakeholders, especially with state and district
functionaries in detail, build their capacity to understand, reflect on the
findings and take appropriate action.
21. It
is to be planned to Dissemination of NAS findings of 2015 at District level by
involving DIET faculty and other sectoral officers.
22. Further
Dissemination of findings at mandal level is to be planned to identify the gaps
and suggest recommendations.
23. Discussions
are to be held in the complex level meetings and rectify the gaps.
24. The
gaps are to be focused in the coming in-service teacher trainings in all
districts (2016-17) District specific activities are to be carried out based on
the NAS findings.
Remediation
programme
25. To
Provide Foundation/Remedial teaching for low performing students in Maths,
Science and English.
26. Recruitment
of Mandal Academic Performance Coordinators instructors in all districts for
effective monitoring as well as to improve student performance.
27. To
track the children performance through online monitoring from bottom to top level

teaching is to be provided to all ‘C’ grade children in all districts.
29. Remedial
Teaching should be provided at the end of the academic year that is after
completion of the S3 Examination.
